The main source-code repository for the Free Software Foundation has been taken down following an attack that compromised some of the website's account passwords and may have gained unfettered administrative access.

The SQL-injection attacks on GNU Savannah exploited holes in Savane, the open-source software hosting application that was spun off from SourceForge, Matt Lee, a campaigns manager for the Free Software Foundation, told The Register. The attackers were then able to obtain the entire database of usernames and hashed passwords, some of which were decrypted using brute-force techniques.

A denial of service attack against Wikileaks that brought the whistleblower site to its knees on Sunday night, in the run up to its publication of classified State Department documents, may turn out to be the work of a lone hacker.

The attack, which rendered the site inaccessible for several hours, might be blamed on an application level assault targeting a vulnerability in Wikileak's Apache web server, according to internet reports.

A patriot-hacker called The Jester has previously used the XerXeS attack tool to attack jihadist sites. Now, if rumours are to be believed this tool was turned against Wikileaks on Sunday, making the site unavailable at a critical time.

You don't get much extra for your money - no Blu-ray Disc player, or bundled content. At least Panasonic has the courtesy to chuck in a stand, a remote and a pair of 3D glasses...

Speak out against piracy and you might find your Web site crippled. "Anonymous" has continued its crusade against copyright advocates, this time taking down the U.S. Copyright Office's Web site via a DDoS attack, according to TorrentFreak.

The attack on the copyright.gov started on Wednesday at around 3 p.m. GMT, and kept the site completely down for about half an hour. Although it recovered, access on Thursday was slow.
